Modern Day Slavery and What Can Be Done (with free curriculum)

Seasons Greetings

‘Tis the season to know how we support or stifle slavery with our dollar.  Unfortunately, slavery is not just history, it’s present.  Fortunately, we have the power and knowledge to continue to work for freedom, equality, and human rights locally and worldwide and teach our children to do the same.

My city, Houston, Texas,  is Number 1 in the nation for victims of human trafficking.  It greatly disturbed me to learn this, but it also inspired me to get more involved.

What Can Be Done?

Here are 5 easy things that you can do this week.

1. Visit Slavery Footprint and find out how many slaves work for you.

Based on the consumer products that I purchase, 27 slaves work for me.  I sent notes to the companies that enslave these humans after learning about the specifics, and signed up to receive more information about how I can help to stop slavery long-term.  You can also use this tool to quite quickly encourage companies to investigate and eliminate slavery and human trafficking from their supply chains.

2. Join or start a grassroots anti-trafficking coalition in your city.

3. Stay abreast of and sign human trafficking and/or human rights petitions on Change or Avaaz.

4. Download FREE curriculum/education packs and teach your children, students, and/or community members about the history and present day reality of slavery. The bonus: you also get the education.

5. Take an hour or two each month to distribute public awareness materials available free through the Department of Health and Human Services. http://www.acf.hhs.gov/progra…/orr/programs/anti-trafficking

6. Watch a human trafficking documentary with your children to raise awareness.  You can also host a house party or screening in your community of a documentary such as Not My Life.

7. If you notice the signs of human trafficking at a local business, such as a massage parlor or modeling studio, report them to the National Hotline for investigation.

You can learn 15 more ways to help fight human trafficking here and take action this week.

All the best to you and your family.
